A glimpse into Saint John’s past. This historic photograph captures the Paramount Theatre overlooking King Square in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1954.

Built in 1947, the Paramount Theatre was a 1,300 seat movie house and a familiar part of uptown Saint John until its demolition in 2012.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Joseph Michaud (c. 1910–2003) was born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. A Second World War veteran, he served with the 162nd Squadron of the RCAF. After the war, Michaud returned to New Brunswick and established a successful commercial photography business, operating a studio for many years on Waterloo Street in Saint John.
